Listening for Moses
This Sunday’s Sermon, “Listening for Moses”, incorporates the Gospel reading of Luke 16: 19-37. This reading is the parable of the rich man and Lazarus. Jesus tells of a rich man who lived in luxury and a poor beggar, Lazarus, who lay at his gate covered in sores, longing for scraps of food. When they died, Lazarus was carried by angels to Abraham’s side, while the rich man went to torment in Hades. From his suffering, the rich man begged Abraham for relief and for Lazarus to warn his brothers, but Abraham explained that a great chasm separated them and that his brothers already had Moses and the Prophets to guide them, if they chose to listen to them. The parable highlights the reversal of fortunes after death, the danger of ignoring the needy, and the sufficiency of God’s Word for repentance and faith.
